Often, it’s hard to know where to start. This is a real problem when you need to get your product out quickly to beat the competition.
Since 2013, I’ve sourced over 1,000 Amazon products. Over the last six years I’ve had to find new Alibaba Suppliers time and time again. It’s taught me a lot. If you’re having trouble finding a good Alibaba Supplier, stop worrying and read on. I’ve developed this expert Alibaba Supplier guide to help Amazon FBA Sellers just like you, fulfil their Private Label Dreams.
Take a now and find your perfect Chinese supplier today.
The Secret To Finding A Chinese Manufacturer On Alibaba
My first lesson is simple but effective. Before you start considering suppliers, you have to accept this.
To find a good Alibaba Supplier, you only need two things:
Quotes and Samples.
That sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? However, it’s important that you don’t underestimate how long this process of reviewing quotes and samples can take.
The difference between finding a good Alibaba Supplier and a bad Alibaba Supplier is often determined by how many quotes and samples you consider.
For your Amazon FBA Business to succeed, it’s vital that you consider enough. I recommend that Amazon FBA Sellers consider at least 20 quotes and 20 simple samples before settling on an Alibaba Supplier.
Remember, you have to do this before you can’t accurately determine the quality of a Chinese Manufacturer’s products.
That’s because until you have quotes and simple samples from potential Chinese suppliers, you have absolutely no idea how good their products are. You also won’t know whether you can afford their services.
Often the pictures displayed on on Alibaba listings are purpusefully designed to mislead.
This is why five quotes and samples will never be enough. Reviewing 20 quotes and simple samples may sound extreme, but it isn’t.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any shortcuts to this process. To succeed as an Amazon FBA Seller you need to know the quality and cost of your products.
Top tip: If you want to save time and money when getting quotes and reviewing samples, work with a Sourcing Agent. They have existing relationships with Chinese Manufacturers making it much easier for them to get simple samples at discount prices. Sourcing Agents can also bundle your samples into a single package, reducing your shipping costs.
1. Develop A Shortlist Of Good Alibaba Suppliers
Now that you understand what’s required, you can start looking for a suitable Alibaba Supplier.
Your first step is to create a shortlist of Chinese Manufacturers.
To start this process, you need to know what your product is.
If you’re unsure about the type of product you are going to launch your Private Label Business with, do yourself a favor and conduct your product for free with Egrow. You need to complete this step first because you cannot find a good Alibaba Supplier unless you have a product.
When you know what your product is, start by searching Alibaba for suppliers that are able to manufacture your product.
To review the listings effectively, filter by supplier.
Try not to rely on a single product keyword to find suppliers. Instead, use a range of keywords related to your product. This will help you find a wide range of suppliers.
Watch out for Gold Suppliers. Verification as a Gold Suppliers indicates that Alibaba has assessed them to be reliable.
Good Chinese Manufacturers specialize in a single product category and material. If you find listings that offer a wide range of products in a number of different materials, avoid them. These Alibaba Suppliers will either be Trading Agencies or Manufacturers that produce low quality products.
When you have shortlisted a few suppliers, use your initiative and google the addresses of each one. Reviewing their business addresses will help you confirm that they are legitimate.
If you are considering using Alibaba Trade Assurance, check that your shortlisted suppliers support the payment protection scheme.
Although this process takes time, if you stick at it you will be able to develop a shortlist of 20 to 30 Alibaba Suppliers.
Remember, when you are reviewing listings it’s important that you only shortlist Chinese Manufacturers that you are comfortable with. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t, so don’t ignore your gut.

2. Contact Alibaba Suppliers Professionally
Once you have a shortlist of 20 to 30 Alibaba Suppliers, you need to contact them professionally.
Don’t take the easy route and send bulk emails. Contact each Alibaba Supplier individually.
While this process may seem time consuming, to get the best responses it’s important that every email you send is personalized and that you use professional language throughout.
Don’t forget to use a Product Inquiry Sheet. It will help you recieve more complete responses from Alibaba Suppliers.
A Product Inquiry Sheet is the easy way to list all of your product’s requirements in a format that’s simple to read and understand. Using one prevents you from receiving incomplete responses, which can result in endless, unsatisfactory email cycles from Chinese Manufacturers.
When contacting Chinese Manufacturers, watch out for some specific red flags.
- Strike off suppliers that are slow to respond to your emails, or appear to be unenthusiastic about the project.
- Also avoid Alibaba Suppliers that do not provide comprehensive responses to your Product Inquiry Sheet. If they are unable to meet all of your product requirements, you cannot work with them.

3. Get Quotes From Your Alibaba Supplier
After contacting and assessing the suitability of each Alibaba Supplier, revise your Chinese Manufacturer Shortlist.
Next request quotes from each Alibaba Supplier and make sure that you keep a record of each supplier’s cost per unit and minimum order quantity.
Remember, to find a good manufacturer it’s important that you get quotes from at least 20 Alibaba Suppliers.
4. Filter Your Alibaba Supplier Quotes
Now, to get this far you should already have a product. And if you already have a product, you should have calculated your margins. If you haven’t, you need to now.
It’s the only way you’ll know whether your product is going to be profitable.
If you’ve never calculated your margins before, take a look at my Importing From China Guide. It will walk you through exactly how to calculate your margins if you’ve never done it before.
Should you have them already, refer to your calculated margins to assess which Chinese Suppliers can manufacture your goods for a suitable price. Remember, a suitable price per unit is one that will allow you to make a profit on the product.
Once you’ve assessed the quotes from each Alibaba Supplier, draw up a shortlist of suppliers.
Your new shortlist list should feature Alibaba Suppliers offering a range of quotes. This means including quotes that are within your upper limit. While it can seem more sensible to only include the cheapest quotes, if you do this you won’t be able to review a range of samples, or fully appreciate what the market has to offer.
This is important because the cost of a product per unit and the quality of the product are not linked.
You can find excellent products that are very cheap, and poorly manufactured products that are very expensive.
5. Order Simple Samples From Your Shortlisted Alibaba Suppliers
When you are satisfied with your new Alibaba Supplier shortlist, you need to order simple samples from each Chinese Manufacturer.
Reviewing simple samples is vital because it’s the only way you can assess the quality of a Supplier’s product.
Make sure you order and review at least 20 simple samples. This will help you develop a good understanding of the options available to you.
Beware. At this stage you do not need to, and should not order complex samples. Simple samples are all you need to assess the quality of Chinese Manufacturer’s products. Ordering complex samples at this stage will waste your time and cost you a lot of money.
Top Tip: Ordering a lot of simple samples can be expensive. Save money and work with a Sourcing Agent. Thanks to their connections, they can often get samples for free.
6. Order Complex Samples and Choose Your Alibaba Supplier
Once you have reviewed your simple samples, shortlist three suitable Chinese Manufacturers and order complex samples from each of them.
This process can take some time, so be patient.
When you have reviewed the complex samples, settle on your preferred Chinese Manufacturer. Be sure to select another to act as the backup supplier. It’s wise to do this just in case anything goes wrong.
Before you start negotiating with your chosen Alibaba Supplier, take some time to consider the next step.
7. Work With A Sourcing Agent
When you have found your preferred Alibaba Supplier, start working with a Sourcing Agent.
I strongly recommend that you do this before agreeing a contract with your supplier.
This is because a Sourcing Agent will get you better prices and save you money.
While the cost of Sourcing Agent can be offputting, the discounts that they achieve will save you money. In practice, the cost of a Sourcing Agent’s services are around 5-10% of your total order. However, they will often achieve discounts of 20-30% for you.
You won’t be able to achieve these discounts on your own. This is because Sourcing Agents are Chinese locals who will be offered local prices by Alibaba Suppliers.
Once you have found the right Sourcing Agent, all you need to do is to tell them who your preferred supplier is. They will then make contact with them and hammer out all of the details.
